IPTV for HDTV?

The question is whether IPTV is a sensible approach to delivering HDTV. Satellites have taken the debate on digital transmission to the next level: while European Member States are busy upgrading their terrestrial networks from analogue to digital, satellites have been transmitting digitally to consumers all over the world for decades and now they are even delivering high definition TV.

HDTV uses more bandwidth than the typical broadband link to the home just to deliver a single channel. Satellites can deliver 4 channels simultaneously today. The consumer doesn't care whether his channels come over satellite, IP, or anything else, he just cares about the content: its quality and its range.
