CTO Conference: Using ICTs for Effective Disaster Management Forum
ESOA was invited to participate in a conference organised by the
Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) on Using ICTs for
Effective Disaster Management in Dar Es Salaam in November 2007. The
participation included a presentation on The Role of Satellites for
Disaster Management and another on Relief Efforts and Examples of
Best Practice using Satellites. To see the conference programme follow

ESOA started advocating the unique ability of satellite technology in the prevention, preparedness, response and recovery phases of the crisis management cycle last year when it organised a media-briefing in Brussels featuring the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and the UNITAR Operational Satellite Applications Programme on the use of satellite technology during crises. Being a space-based infrastructure that remains intact when other telecommunications networks are either destroyed or overloaded because of natural or man-made disasters, satellites not only assist governments, aid and relief workers to coordinate relief efforts but they also allow those affected to call their loved ones to tell them they are still alive!
