CTO Conference: Connecting Rural Communities Africa Forum 2007
ESOA participated in a conference organised by the Commonwealth Telecommunications
Organisation (CTO) on Connecting Rural Communities Africa Forum 2007
in Nairobi in August 2007. The participation included a presentation
on The Role of Satellites to bridge the Digital Divide and hosting a
pre-conference workshop on Satellites for Africa's Sustainable Development.
The workshop addressed the following issues: Broadband satellite communications,
VoIP over satellite for the African Communities, Hybrid Satellite systems
and last mile solutions for Africa, Satellite Applications and services
for Africa. To see the conference programme follow this link:

ESOA started advocating the ability of satellites for Africa last year when it organised a high-level workshop in Brussels with the United Nations' World Food Programme and World Health Organisation on Satellites for Development and Africa. Being a space-based infrastructure with one satellite able to see and serve one third of the earth's surface, satellites are ideal for a land-mass in need of communications such as Africa. For the same reasons, ESOA has also recently advocated satellites to bridge the digital divide in Europe with the European Commission.
