Satellites - Critical Infrastructure
In a Day Without Satellites...
- Millions of viewers would lose multi-channel TV and live football.
- There would be wide-spread power cuts as the national grid loses GPS synchronisation.
- Financial markets would be seriously disrupted as the time-stamping system for transactions fails.
- Ship-to-shore communications and maritime distress signalling would come to an end.
- Users in rural, mountain and island regions connected all around the world only by satellite broadband would be cut off.
- Military operations around the world would be severely disrupted.
- Unexpected storms could cause chaos and crops would be lost without an accurate and timely weather forecasting system.
- If disaster strikes, there would be no way to communicate with survivors and coordinate relief efforts using satellite imagery.
Satellites connect millions with resilient communications vital for Everyday, Emergency and Strategic applications.
Today, ESOA Members fly 146 satellites operating in L, S, C, X, Ku and Ka bands. They enable economic growth and innovation while ensuring safety, security and social inclusion.
Satellite is one of the essential wireless technologies needed to cater to the diverse needs, cultures and geographies of Europe. All these technologies rely on a range of frequency bands allocated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Private operators are committed to continued investment to respond to the growing demand for their services.
