Spanish Presidency Initiative on ICT
The Spanish Presidency of the European Council that started in January 2010 took an innovative step when in the autumn of 2009, it called upon the European ICT industry sector to come together and prepare a report on priorities for the sector. Given the conflicting and competing interests of the different associations and sectors involved, this initiative represented a challenge but one that was worth taking on, given the visibility of the initiative.
Areas dealt with by the report are: productivity and growth, sustainability, creative content in the Digital World, Trust, Participation for All, Trade / Market Access, Reduction in Administrative Burdens. ESOA participated actively in the process notably either contributing to or initiating the sections on sustainability / participation for all / trade and market access. The Spanish Presidency will rely upon the report identifying ICT priorities in Europe with Belgium and Hungary (who will hold the next EU Presidencies until mid 2011) and use it as a basis for discussions with the European Commission to define the EU 2020 strategy.
