Very few people believed in the value of satellite backhaul for providing mobile services in rural and sub-urban regions and in developing countries until the 21st century. Since then, thanks to satellites mobile telephony was able to spread and reach countries where no other economically viable solutions were possible. The practicality of mobile telephony, combined with newer types of usage (SMS) and business models (flat rates), the affordability of low-cost handsets and the adoption of government regulations for universal coverage have led to tremendous demand for mobile services in those areas, served by satellite links.

How it works

Satellite operators having been working with mobile operators to identify, design and integrate a flexible and cost effective service to deliver additional backhaul capacity to existing sites, and primary connectivity to new sites previously deemed commercially unviable. Designed to provide primary connectivity as well as overspill for traffic during peak times, to enable carrier grade backhaul to be delivered for the following use cases:

Cellular backhaul over satellite has proven to be the smart and cost effective technology when compared to terrestrial backhaul options. Following a series of highly successful trials, many mobile network operators are using satellite backhaul for both primary connectivity and overspill from small terrestrial backhaul circuits.
