Tests Confirm Viability of Satellite Broadband

Satellite broadband has long been seen as a second rate source for Internet access. This perception had led to the exclusion of satellite broadband from certain programs in Poland. The exclusion of any technology however amounts to a breach of the EU principle of 'technology neutrality' and violates EU law. Therefore, the Office of Electronic Communications – the main regulatory body in Poland – undertook tests1 to assess the viability of Internet access via satellite.

A total of 14 users in the Office of Electronic Communications, used the system, normally designed for use by a single end user, simultaneously. The tests continued over a few weeks including under severe weather conditions (-10°C, snow, frost) in Warsaw. The results were positive, showing no interruption or degradation of service, even during winter conditions, thus validating the viability of satellite broadband for use in projects co-financed by the European Union. The tests concluded that the quality of service of Satellite Broadband is comparable to any other technology providing Internet access.

The official results of the tests were approved and signed as below in February 2011 by involved officials of the Office of Electronic Communications.
