Chairmen
The Chairman, like the two Vice-Chairmen is appointed by members for a period of one year, and is renewable for a second year. They are mandated by the Board to formally represent the Association in high-level meetings along with the Secretary General. They further supervise the work of the Association, on behalf of the Board. The Chairman Emeritus is a personal appointment in recognition of Mr. Giuliano Berretta's contribution to the sector and to the work of ESOA.
Chairman: Michel de Rosen
Michel de Rosen , Chief Executive Officer and Board Member, Eutelsat Communications – joined Eutelsat Communications in July 2009 and was appointed Chief Executive Officer in November 2009. He is also a board member of Eutelsat Communications.
His career has included Chief Executive positions in international publicly traded groups and senior public service appointments.
He began his career in France in the Inspection générale des finances in the Ministry of Finance. He was Chargé de Mission in the office of the Ministry of Defence from 1980 to 1981 and from 1986 to 1988 was Chief of Staff of the Minister of Industry and Telecommunications.
Between 1983 and 1999 he held executive positions at Rhône-Poulenc, including CEO of Pharmuka from 1983 to 1986, CEO of Rhône-Poulenc Fibers and Polymers from 1988 to 1993, and CEO of Rhône-Poulenc Rorer (USA) from 1993 to 1999. From 2000 to 2008 he was Chairman and CEO of ViroPharma in the USA. He returned to France in 2008 to the position of Chairman and CEO of SGD.
Michel de Rosen is a graduate of the HEC business school and France’s National School of Administration (ENA - EcoleNationaled'Administration). He is also a Board member of ABB.
He is married with four children.
Vice-Chairman: Dave McGlade
Intelsat CEO David McGlade heads the world's leading provider of satellite services, with operations that include a global network of commercial communications satellites and terrestrial infrastructure serving over 200 countries and territories. Mr. McGlade is a 29-year telecommunications and media industry veteran with experience in cable TV, broadband and wireless. At Intelsat, Mr. McGlade is focused on continuously improving operations and on creating new revenue growth through enhanced communications service offerings for Intelsat's customers in the media, network services and government/military sectors.
Mr. McGlade joined Intelsat in April 2005, following the company's acquisition by a group of private equity firms, collectively named Intelsat Holdings. During his tenure at Intelsat, Mr. McGlade led the company's 2006 acquisition of PanAmSat, a $6.4 billion transaction which created the industry's largest satellite operator with leading positions in each of the customer sectors served by the company.
This acquisition, and the subsequent highly successful integration, resulted in an attractive valuation expansion, reflected in the sale of Intelsat in February 2008 to a consortium of investors led by BC Partners. The acquisition transaction valued Intelsat at an enterprise value of $16.4 billion. Revenue and revenue backlog for the quarter ended June 30, 2012 was approximately $638.7 million and $10.6 billion, respectively.
Prior to joining Intelsat, he served as Chief Executive Officer of O2 UK (previously BT Cellnet) since October 2000. Mr. McGlade has extensive experience bringing new technologies and converged services to businesses and other customers. As President, West Region, Sprint PCS, he launched the first CDMA network outside of Asia.
Mr. McGlade is a non-executive board member of Skyworks Solutions, and is deputy chairman of Intelsat. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University.

Vice-Chairman: Rupert Pearce
Rupert Pearce is the Chief Executive Officer of Inmarsat plc.
Rupert joined Inmarsat in January 2005 as Group General Counsel and between 2009 and 2011 additionally held the position of Senior Vice President, Inmarsat Enterprises. Inmarsat Enterprises is a division of Inmarsat that comprises strategy and business development, legal and regulatory affairs, as well as certain operating assets and investments, including Inmarsat's recently launched Global Xpress initiative comprising the Inmarsat-5 generation of revolutionary Ka-band satellites. In January 2012, Rupert stepped up to become Chief Executive Officer of Inmarsat.
Previously, Rupert worked for Atlas Venture, a transatlantic venture capital company, where he was a partner working with the firm's European and U.S. investment teams on investment, divestment, M&A and corporate finance transactions and was a member of the firm's investment and exit committees. He was previously also an equity partner at the international law firm Linklaters, where he spent 13 years specialising in corporate finance, M&A and private equity transactions.
Rupert received an MA (First Class) in Modern History from Oxford University and won the 1995 Fullbright Fellowship in U.S. securities law, studying at the Georgetown Law Center. He has been a visiting fellow of the Imperial College Business School, London lecturing on the school's Entrepreneurship programme, and is the co-author of 'Raising Venture Capital' (Wiley).
Chairman Emeritus: Romain Bausch
Romain Bausch was President and Chief Executive Officer of SES from 1995 until March 2014 and during his tenure, he served as ESOA's Chairman twice, once at its inception in 2002 and then again from 2009-2010.
Before joining SES as its chief executive, Mr. Bausch occupied key positions in the banking, media and telecommunications sectors and spent a five-year term as a Director and Vice Chairman of SES. He served also as Chairman of the Board of Directors of SES ASTRA, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of O3b Networks and member of the Board of Solaris Mobile Ltd. Mr Bausch also served as a Director of Fedil – Business Federation Luxembourg and is a member of the Boards of Directors of Aperam, BIP Investment Partners and Compagnie Financière La Luxembourgeoise. He graduated with a degree in economics (specialisation in business administration) from the University of Nancy. He holds an honorary doctorate from the Sacred Heart University in Luxembourg.
Chairman Emeritus: Giuliano Berretta
Mr. Giuliano Berretta was CEO of Eutelsat Communications, one of the world’s three leading satellite operators until November 2009. The Group reported consolidated revenues of €829.1 million in 2007 from the operation of its 24 communications satellites in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. Mr Berretta was also a Board member of the Spanish satellite operator, Hispasat S.A., another ESOA member.
Mr Berretta joined the Eutelsat international organisation in 1990 as its first Commercial Director. Prior to joining Eutelsat Mr Berretta worked at the European Space Agency's headquarters in Paris and its technical centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands where he was instrumental in the design of Europe's pioneering communications satellite programmes. Before ESA, Mr. Berretta spent seven years with Italian industry (Telettra, Selenia) in the field of military and civilian radio links and television broadcasting.
Mr Berretta was elected 'Satellite Executive of the Year 2000' by Via Satellite, a leading publication in the satellite sector. In June 2002 he was one of 50 European businessmen recognised as a “Leader at the Forefront of Change" by Business Week Europe. Mr Berretta holds a degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Padua (Italy) an Honorary Doctorate in Management Engineering from the University of Bologna (Italy) and an honorary Professorship from the University Ricardo Palma of Lima (Peru). He is a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur of the French Republic and a Cavaliere del Lavoro by the Italian Republic.
